A Major North Sea operator faced fluid loss issues during Plug and Abandonment operations, preventing cement placement. In September 2024, a major North Sea Operator faced a critical issue during the Plug and Abandonment (P&A) of an offshore gas producer in the UK Southern North Sea. Severe fluid losses through both the tubing and annulus prevented the placement of a crucial cement barrier necessary for securing the well. Despite more than 20 Lost Circulation Material (LCM) pills being pumped, the problem persisted, halting key operations such as xmas tree removal and completion recovery. With rising rig costs and increasing risks to well integrity, an urgent solution was needed to stabilise the well and complete the P&A safely.

The CannSeal package was mobilised from Stavanger within days, with 4 Interwell personnel dispatched to the offshore wellsite, supported by 24/7 onshore technical guidance.
In the meantime, perforation testing was completed in less than 7 days, and Interwell collaborated with the client to rapidly develop a detailed job plan through a streamlined Intervention on Paper (IoP) process. The CannSeal system then performed 3 precise epoxy injections into the 7” x 9-5/8” cased hole annulus, building a 7.5m annular foundation that stabilised the well and allowed balanced cement to be pumped through the tubing with zero fluid loss.
This innovative approach, utilised globally for the first time, achieved a 2,500psi pressure seal and allowed the client to proceed with P&A activities. The entire operation, from equipment mobilisation to completion, was finished in just 10 days.
